Busy Teachers,

I used to spend my evenings, weekends, and even breaks lesson planning, grading, and attending after school events. My students were learning, but my personal life was a disaster. I was lonely. My house was filthy and cluttered. I was out of shape and exhausted. And my relationships with my students were beginning to diminish because I was spread too thin.

I thought this was just what it felt like to be a good teacher.

I believed this sacrifice was required to be an impactful. I had internalized all of the times I had been told to serve others and “help people at all times.” I believed my students’ needs were more important than my own. I believed the role of a good teacher was to give, give, give.

I was wrong. I was headed toward burnout. I wasn’t taking care of myself.  I was putting all of my energy into teaching and leaving almost nothing for myself. It was painful. I comforted myself by devouring self-help and work-life balance books. I began applying what I learned to my life.

I ended up leaving my dream job and got a fresh start. Now I am working on living my dream life.

Of course, I’m still teaching, but now I put myself and my new family first. I am stronger than the teacher culture that tries to make me feel guilty for having a life outside of school. I leave work on time, rarely take work home, live in a comfortable house, am healthy, and set aside time for my hobbies. I have established the mindset and accompanying boundaries to make sure I am taking care of myself and my kids.

Dedicated teachers, I get why you're teacher tired. I understand the need for self-care Sundays. But, you know what? You deserve to center your entire life around self-care. You are better than just little pockets of time for yourself AFTER you have taken care of everyone else.

I want to help you create a stronger work-life balance to help you become an even better teacher, mama, wife, girlfriend, sister, daughter, plant-mom--an even better YOU.
